When I first learned the meaning of life, I was astounded, simply astounded. It’s so simple. Not only is it simple, it is sensible. The meaning of life is to expand in love.
Now think about this.
You always hear people say we have come here to learn, to correct past mistakes or to assist others in their journey. I’m sure there are a myriad of reasons other than these, but you get the idea. No one ever seems to say that the entire reason we are here is to love. Simply that with nothing added nor anything taken away. Just Love.
Yet if God made from Himself all that is and God is perfection, what is there for some form of him to learn? What past mistakes could there have been? What need could other forms of God have? Perfection can’t get any more perfect and what is made from nothing but perfection can’t get any less perfect. So what’s left? To be and do what God is, Love.
Love always gives without taking and never suffers loss by what it gives away.
That’s a nice sound bite, but how can we wrap our minds around it and make sense of it? With an analogy, of course. (By now you are figuring out I like visual representations of metaphysical concepts, right?)
Think back to a time you gave someone a gift. Remember your favorite gift-giving experience. You found the perfect item, wrapped it beautifully (or stuck it in a nice gift bag) and couldn’t wait for the recipient to open it. The anticipation was a pure delight. It felt so good to know you had chosen something your loved one was going to treasure. And on the day your special person opened the gift, you got to experience love at its finest. Not only were they thrilled, you felt like you might burst with joy. You personally hadn’t received anything yet your loved one’s pleasure enveloped you and filled you to overflowing. Somehow, in that moment, you were greater than you’d ever been. You were more because the love and joy was so big. The gift you gave ended up being a gift you got!
That, My Friends, is how God does what He does. He is Love and so He logically loves and in the loving becomes even more than He had been. And since we are God in a tiny little human packages, the same holds true for you and me. When we give, we receive. This isn’t some payback for loving. It is Love expanding as even more Love with Love!
Herein we find the meaning of life and true peace.
